New recipes to increase daily oat intake among youths
Channel NewsAsia - 1 hour 32 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: Temasek Polytechnic is partnering Quaker to get youths to increase their daily oat intake by adding a new twist to traditional Asian dishes.
Experts said consuming oats regularly can help to lower bad cholesterol and reduce blood pressure, among other things.
Student Jamie Tan, School of Applied Science, Temasek Polytechnic, said: "I’d never tried oats before this project. Now I think it is tasty and can be incorporated into many dishes."
Tan is among a team of six students who have creatively developed 20 original recipes which include Hainanese Oat Chicken Rice, Tandoori Chicken Kiev with Oats, Oats Pancake and Tropical Oat Smoothie.
Kalpana Bhaskaran, lecturer, School of Applied Science, Temasek Polytechnic, said: "All the six students have never cooked at home. So it was a real challenge to get them interested in cooking and to cook healthy food, as well as create novel recipes. But the students are good and they try to incorporate recipes with whatever they like."
The polytechnic had surveyed 130 youths aged 15 to 22 and found that only 27 per cent of them ate oats once a month.
