11—year—old crowned Junior World Mental Mathematics Champion
Channel NewsAsia - 46 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: An 11—year—old student in Singapore is now the Junior World Mental Mathematics Champion, after beating 30 peers in a competition in Germany.
From multiplication to square roots, Kinjal Shah calculated all the sums without pen or paper. Fewer than 50 people in the world are practising this kind of math at her age.
Her father, a mental math trainer, has been teaching her since she was seven. Not surprisingly, Kinjal scores full marks in math at school.
The student from Global Indian International School said: "You have to always be positive — if you do stem sums and you get five of them wrong, don’t think that you are going down. Just stay positive and say you can do it next time."
The encouraging champ, who could also calculate the day of the week of any date in any year, said with practice and focus, anyone can learn to solve mental math problems.
Singapore has not held any mental math competitions yet, but Kinjal and her dad hope to organise one soon.
