Los Angeles, CA, United States (CNS) - Regina King has been stealing scenes since she got her start on "227" at the age of 14. Dozens of films and television appearances later, she's doing it again on the gritty cop drama "Southland," nearly short-lived after NBC pulled the plug, citing it was too gritty and inappropriate for 9pm (Jay Leno had occupied all the 10pm time slots). But the show is now getting a second chance on TNT, the home of hit adult dramas like "The Closer" and "Leverage," where the "gritty and inappropriate" look at LAPD cops is currently re-airing its first season. The second season premieres on March 2nd.
On "Southland," King plays Detective Lydia Adams, bringing her signature wide-eyed attitude but ultimately big heart to the character, who finds herself dealing with everything from gangs to child abandonment cases to being involved in an intense shootout in her own home, as seen in the first season's finale, which also found her partner Russell (Tom Everett Scott) injured.
King says the start of the second season airing on TNT picks up right where it left off. "You know I'm dealing with Russell and you know what his fate is going to be, you know, what his health status is," King says. "And I'm also being forced into a situation where I have to have a new partner which I was told originally by my D3 that I would be able to work alone until Russell comes back."
The first season of "Southland" earned a loyal following but not exactly exorbitant ratings for the network. Before it started work on its second season, NBC announced the show would undergo some major re-tooling and focus more on its main three characters, which include rookie cop Ben Sherman (played by Ben McKenzie), his partner John Cooper played by Michael Cudlitz, and King's Detective Lydia. But King says the show still allows you to get a feel for all the characters.
"One of the things that's great is that they've been very - they being the creators and writers - have been very smart to not try to tell eight stories in 40-plus minutes," King says. "They're doing a great job of kind-of spreading that out and, if we're lucky enough to come back for a [full] second season, you'll get to see how all seven, eight of these characters just unfold and what's going on in their lives behind the badge."
TNT is already re-airing the show's first season, which is available in an even more "gritty and inappropriate" uncensored version on DVD. The second season of "Southland" premieres on TNT on Tuesday, March 2nd at 10pm/EST.
