ShareThis February 12, 2010 3:21 p.m. EST Topics: economy, business and finance, economy, United States Melvin Baker - AHN Reporter Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - Retail sales in the United States beat expectations in January, increasing hope that the economy is recovering. Sales rose 0.5 percent from December, the Commerce Department reported Friday, after December's numbers were revised from a 0.3 percent decline to a 0.1 percent slip. It was third increase in the past four months. Analysts had expected an increase of 0.3 percent. Over the past year, sales have grown 4.7 percent. Growing demand for American products from overseas and the restocking of inventories are at the core of the increase. Excluding auto sales, purchases were up 0.6 percent. Surveys had expected a 0.5 percent gain. Of 13 major sales categories, nine experienced gains. Sales at Internet retailers and other non-store retailers climbed 1.6 percent, while sales at general merchandise stores rose 1.5 percent. The hopeful data was tempered by another report that American optimism about the state of the economy has grown gloomier. A Reuters/University of Michigan survey found that consumer sentiment fell to 73.7 in February from 74.4 the month before. The index had been forecast to rise to 75.
