Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines (AHN) - The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting said on Wednesday it will ask the Philippine Commission on Election to implement provisions of the Fair Election Act. The electoral watchdog is particularly referring to movie and television personalities who endorse political candidates.
The PPCRV said the Filipino celebrities who endorse candidates must resign from their television or radio programs or newspapers where they have columns. That provision of the Act applies during the four-month campaign period, which started Tuesday.
Comelec Law Department Director Ferdinand Rafanan said the commission is prepared to implement the provisions of the Act, which specifies the act of endorsing is campaigning.
The move would affect endorsers of leading presidential candidates like Nacionalista Party bet Sen. Manuel Villar and Liberal Party standard bearer Sen. Benigno Aquino III.
Villar's endorsers include Filipino comedy king Rodolfo "Dolphy" Quizon and ABS-CBN noontime show host Willie Revillame. It would badly hit Quizon, who just signed a contract with ABC 5. It would also affect Revillame financially, who is reportedly paid daily $21,547 (one million pesos) to host ABS-CBN's noontime show "Wow-wowee."
Aquino's celebrity endorsers include his younger sister Kris Aquino-Yap, and popular love team Dingdong Dantes and Marianne Rivera. Aquino-Yap hosts a daily celebrity newscast and a weekend celebrity talk show, and stars in a daily drama. Dantes and Rivera are among the highest-earning stars of GMA Network.
Villar has gone on record that he did not pay Quizon and Revillame a single centavo for their endorsements. He said he got them to appear on his campaign commercials because he shared with the two celebrities the common factor of rising above their humble beginnings.
