ShareThis February 13, 2010 7:38 a.m. EST Topics: science and technology, science, health, United States David Goodhue - AHN Reporter New York, NY, United States (AHN) - People who stick to a so-called "Mediterranean diet" are less likely to have small areas of dead brain tissue linked to thinking problems, according to Columbia University researchers. The diet includes high amounts of vegetables, legumes, fruits, cereals, fish and monounsaturated fats like olive oil, and low intakes of red meat, dairy products and poultry. The diet also includes moderate alcohol consumption. The researchers assessed the diets of 712 people lining in New York and divided them into three groups based on how closely they followed a Mediterranean diet. Six years later, the participants were given brain imaging, and a total of 238 people had at least one area of brain damage. Those who stuck mostly to the diet were 36 percent less likely to have areas of brain damage than those who followed it less, the researchers said in a statement. Moderate Mediterranean diet followers were 21 percent less likely to have brain damage than the lowest group. Previous research by the same group of researchers linked the Mediterranean diet with a decreased risk of Alzheimer's disease. The latest study is published by the American Academy of Neurology and will be presented at its 62nd Annual Meeting in Toronto April 10 to April 17.
