S’pore congratulates Austrian city on winning winter YOG hosting bid
Channel NewsAsia - 2 hours 17 minutes ago
SINGAPORE : Singapore’s Youth Olympic Games Organising Commitee (SYOGOC) has congratulated the Austrian city of Innsbruck on winning the bid to hold the first Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2012.
Innsbruck beat Finland’s Kuopio, the only other candidate on the shortlist.
The announcement was made at the International Olympic Committee’s Lausanne headquarters on Friday.
In a statement, SYOGOC chairman Ng Ser Miang said Innsbruck’s bid proposal of developing a Media Lab using different media environments and platforms would help encourage friendships to be built among youth globally.
SYOGOC also pledged to work closely to share knowledge and experience with Innsbruck to create sustainable programmes that would leave a lasting legacy beyond the YOG.
Singapore will host the inaugural YOG from Aug 14—26 in 2010.
The republic is expecting to receive some 3,500 athletes and 800 officials from 205 National Olympic Committees.
The athletes, aged between 14 and 18, will compete in 26 sports and take part in cultural and educational activities. — CNA /ls
