9 researchers receive S$2m in funding to help commercialise new ideas
Channel NewsAsia - Friday, December 19
SINGAPORE: Nine researchers from Singapore’s institutes of higher learning have become the first to receive funding from the National Research Foundation to turn some of their ideas into commercial viabilities.
The grants, totalling more than S$2 million, come under the foundation’s new Proof—of—Concept (POC) scheme.
The National Research Foundation said it has received very enthusiastic response from researchers for the first selection programme for the POC scheme.
Of the 138 applications received, 82 of them came from the National University of Singapore. Another 35 came from the Nanyang Technological University and the rest from the Singapore Management University and the polytechnics.
One of the projects involves developing a new mitral valve implantation device to help cut heart operation time by half, lowering the surgical trauma and risks.
Professor Theodoros Kofidis, Department of Surgery, National University of Singapore, said: "If this succeeds, it could address thousands of patients in the region and all over the world. This could have immediate public health benefits for the patient, cost benefits for the patient and insurance."
Projects to benefit users of electronics products and personal computers are also being looked at.
Professor Yeo Kiat Seng, School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, said: "Currently in the market, all the IC chips are over—designed and, as a result, the power consumption for all these chips will be very high.
"So I am looking at this POC scheme. If we are successful, we will create a totally new industry and this industry will be related to green electronics as well as something that is environmentally friendly."
Over at Nanyang Polytechnic, Dr Zuruzi Abu Samah is researching on nanotechnology and nano—fabrication.
The National Research Foundation plans to launch the next round of research projects under the POC scheme in March next year. — CNA/vm
