"Little Nyonya" storyline does no justice to Joanne Peh?
Channel NewsAsia - Friday, December 26
The hottest discussion in town is definitely the current Channel 8's weekdays, 9pm Blockbuster of the year "Little Nyonya". As the story unfolds, there bound to be more discussions especially on Joanne Peh's character.
Joanne Peh plays Huang Yu Zhu, second daughter from a traditional family, a kind-hearted and gentle young lady.
As the saying goes "The good will receive good returns". But what has this nice young lady done to get "raped" and even forced to eat worms?
Xin.sg visited the set when Joanne was filming the scene which she described as "the biggest challenge for her".
At a corner of a dilapidated house, the "pregnant" Joanne stood shabbily dressed. An anxious and worried Joanne was preparing for the scene where she had to "eat" worms.
"I have to overcome a lot of psychological barriers. I'm afraid of worms and I don't like to get dirty; I'm a "clean-freak". I have to keep myself clean at all times, if not I'll feel very uncomfortable," Joanne revealed.
When Joanne was stepping into the house, signs of worries and fear creep up on her face. A professional Joanne stood calmly in the middle of the room filled with wriggly worms, earthworms and crickets. The director requested for a rehearsal and Joanne is to "mingle around" with the worms to build "rapport" and confidence before the actual filming begins.
"Camera, rolling, action!" Joanne did what she was told to do: She crawled on the muddy ground, searching frantically for worms to fill her stomach. She grabbed a cricket and started 'munching'. All the fears previously were replaced by her contented look. This young lady does deserve some respects!
Once the director shouted "Cut", Joanne immediately jumped up from the floor and started screaming. "It was really scary! I was glad that I overcame my psychological barrier. When I see the worms wriggling, I had to pluck up much courage to use my bare hands to grab them. It was really disgusting! As I speak, it still feels like the worms are crawling on my hands!"
Upon recalling the scene that was successful done with one take, Joanne still felt the disgust and the palpitations. Joanne playfully relates, "Especially those bigger-sized crickets, they are ugly! Though I might have also scared them with my beggar look, but you know, their eyes are so big, it's really disgusting! I can't image how I managed to use my bare hands to touch them. To be honest, I was scared to the point that I almost cried.
"The director has helped me overcome my psychological barriers. He kept reassuring that I can do it. He is very supportive and I just could not disappoint him. I kept telling myself that I would not die by grabbing worms, so just get it over and done with in one take," Joanne said.
So who did Joanne offend and what exactly happened that she had to go such miserable extent? Stay tune to "Little Nyonya" to find out for yourself!
