Report: NKorea's Kim using special train to travel
AP - 2 hours 40 minutes ago
SEOUL, South Korea - Kim Jong Il's personal armored train has started moving again, the latest indication the North Korean totalitarian leader has recovered from a reported stroke, a newspaper reported Monday. The train had reportedly been sitting idle for months.
South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities confirmed the train's movement through images from spy satellites and surveillance planes, Seoul's Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported Monday, citing unidentified South Korean officials.
The paper said the 66-year-old Kim appears to have been discharged from a hospital between early and mid-October following a stroke in August, and has started using the train again to travel around the country.
The Tokyo Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper, reported last month that the train _ which is used by Kim only _ had not moved for months since Kim fell ill. The report cited unidentified South Korean officials.
Kim's health is of keen interest because he has not publicly anointed a successor. He inherited the leadership from his father in 1994 and rules the isolated, nuclear-armed country with absolute authority.
Spokesman Kim Ho-nyeon of South Korea's Unification Ministry, in charge of monitoring North Korea, declined to confirm the report, citing intelligence matters.
The National Intelligence Service, Seoul's main spy agency, said it would check the report.
The North's state media have stepped up a campaign apparently aimed at projecting an image of Kim as healthy and active.
The official Korean Central News Agency carried dispatches in the past week on Kim's public appearances, saying he toured factories, military units and other facilities in Jagang province, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) north of Pyongyang. KCNA also released undated photos of the leader.
The reports did not say when Kim's visits took place.
The reclusive leader is said to have a fear of flying and rarely travels abroad. When he has, he has normally used his train, including on a 2006 visit to China and a 2001 trip to Moscow.
South Korean and U.S. officials say Kim suffered a stroke in August and underwent surgery. His failure to appear at a September military parade celebrating North Korea's 60th anniversary sparked speculation about his health.
North Korea has denied Kim was ever ill.
