First boat in Volvo race expected to arrive in S’pore early Tuesday
Channel NewsAsia - 1 hour 52 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: The first boat in the Volvo Ocean Race — the world’s most gruelling ocean—going race — is expected to arrive in Singapore early Tuesday morning.
The eight competing boats started in Alicante, Spain, in October this year and have since travelled to Cape Town in South Africa and Cochin in India.
They are now sailing along the Malacca Straits as the race heads to this part of Asia for the first time.
Besides different weather conditions, the competitors also face various other challenges such as piracy.
Marcus Hutchinson, director, Communications, Volvo Ocean Race, said: "There is an awful lot more debris in the water washed out from monsoons... There is also the risk of collision with small unlit boats in this part of the world."
After crossing the finishing line, the boats will arrive at Sentosa three hours later where the official welcoming ceremony will be staged.
But the sailors will not have much time to catch the sights in Singapore. After anchoring, they will leave for their Christmas break before returning for the In—Port Race in January.
Meanwhile, the boats will be sent for repairs and will be subsequently displayed at the Race Village at Sentosa for the public from January 8.
