And the euro extended gains made in New York as dealers were upbeat ahead of a rate-setting meeting of the European Central Bank. Tokyo ended 1.10 percent higher, adding 103.52 points to 9,542.65. The Nikkei index was given a lift by figures showing the economy grew 5.0 percent in the March quarter, up from an initial estimate of 4.9 percent and beating forecasts for a fall. The main driver of the expansion was exports, the data showed, although there were improvements in domestic consumption, lifting hopes in the fight against deflation. Hong Kong closed 11.46 points higher at 19,632.70. Sydney rose 1.14 percent, or 50 points, to 4,435.3, with mining leading the way on news that China's trade surplus soared in May thanks to a surge in exports. Beijing Thursday posted a 48.5 percent year-on-year jump in shipments due to demand for Chinese-made clothes and electronics. Investors also cheered news that the Australian unemployment rate had dropped to 5.2 percent in May from 5.4 percent the previous month. But the strong export data had little effect on Chinese stocks, with analysts saying the figures had already been priced into a late rally in the previous session. News that house prices rose 12.4 percent last month also weighed on property developers and banks as dealers do not expect any easing of tightening measures aimed at reining in the property market. Shanghai lost 0.82 percent, or 21.29 points, to end at 2,562.58. The trade data came after US lawmakers Wednesday vowed to launch legislative action in two weeks to punish China for refusing to revalue the yuan, claiming the currency is undervalued and gives the country an unfair trade advantage. "Strong export growth and a sharp pick-up in China's trade surplus will not go unnoticed in Washington," said Brian Jackson, a senior analyst at Royal Bank of Canada in Hong Kong. The single European currency jumped to 1.2067 dollars in Tokyo morning trade, from 1.1975 in New York late Wednesday, while it gained to 110.11 yen from 109.35. The euro extended gains from New York ahead of the ECB meeting Thursday, in which few expect the record low interest rate of 1.0 percent to be changed. But bank president Jean-Claude Trichet will have to answer questions about how he plans to steer it out of its biggest crisis ever and restore confidence in the single currency. Most dealers want details on the bank's decision to buy debt issued by countries such as Greece, Ireland and Portugal and on how long the controversial Securities Market Program might last. Fed chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress Wednesday that the US economy was on track to grow 3.5 percent this year and only suffer a "modest" impact from the eurozone debt crisis. "The economy... appears to be on track to continue to expand through this year and next," he said, adding that the pace of recovery would likely quicken in 2011, on the back of rising consumer spending, trade and investment. US consumers, long the drivers of the world's largest economy, are spending around 3.5 percent more today than they were this time last year, Bernanke said. But he warned the property market continued to drag on the recovery, as prices are pushed down by vast numbers of vacant houses and home builders struggle to get credit. The Fed later published its latest Beige Book report on the state of the US economy, which said labour market conditions "improved slightly with permanent employment levels edging up in most districts". US unemployment currently stands at 9.7 percent. However, Wall Street was not too impressed and the Dow sank 0.41 percent. Oil turned higher in Asian trade. New York's main futures contract, light sweet crude for delivery in July, rose 18 cents to 74.56 dollars a barrel while London's Brent North Sea crude for July was up six cents to 74.33 dollars. Gold closed at 1,226.00-1,227.00 US dollars an ounce in Hong Kong, down from Wednesday's close of 1,233.00-1,234.00 dollars.
