600 watch 'The Cove' in Tokyo despite protest

TOKYO (AFP) - – Nearly 600 people Wednesday packed a conference hall in Tokyo to watch an Oscar-winning documentary about dolphin slaughter in Japan after a series of cancellations due to protests by right-wing groups.

Despite demonstrations, "The Cove" was sold out, with 30 to 40 people also watching the one-time screening on TV outside the hall.

It was the biggest audience for the movie in the country after three theatres cancelled screenings for later this month after right-wingers -- known for ear-splitting protests using megaphones -- targeted the film.

Hiroyuki Shinoda, an organiser and chief editor of "Tsukuru", a magazine, said he had expected harassment by nationalist protesters, with dozens of police officers patrolling outside the hall.

"I want people who gathered here tonight to send supportive messages to movie theatres," Shinoda said. "Protesters didn't do anything harmful. They only said they would do something bad."

"So such cancellation of screenings is nothing but self-restraint, the same thing that happened to the movie 'Yasukuni'," said Shinoda, who also encouraged Japanese media to "stand more strongly for freedom of expression".

In 2008 the threat of protests forced several cinemas in Tokyo to cancel plans to show a film about the controversial Yasukuni war shrine, and the distributor delayed the premiere by several weeks.

"The Cove" depicts fishermen's annual dolphin hunt in the southern Japanese town of Taiji and won the Academy Award for best documentary in March.

The film, featuring graphic footage of the sea mammals being harpooned to death, angered local fishermen, who say dolphin hunting is part of their culture.

At the Oscars director Louie Psihoyos denied he was guilty of "Japan-bashing" and said it was meant as a public health warning to Japanese who are sold dolphin meat contaminated by mercury.
