HK court adjourns case against wife of former NKF chairman to Monday
Channel NewsAsia - Saturday, December 20
HONG KONG : Sentencing for the wife of former National Kidney Foundation chairman Richard Yong has been adjourned for a second time this week, to next Monday.
66—year—old On Shu Kio had earlier pleaded guilty to one charge of money laundering; that is, helping her husband to transfer about US$2.8 million from their joint account in Singapore to a bank account in Hong Kong.
Madam On is facing a maximum jail time of 10 years and a hefty fine.
District Court Judge Andrew Chan said that he needed more time to consider the case.
He mentioned that a money—laundering case he presided over last year had been criticised by the Court of Appeal, for its sentencing approach.
At the end of her mitigation plea, Judge Chan rejected her claim that she was unaware of her husband’s bankruptcy status when she made the money transfer.
He said the liquidation of the couple’s assets in Singapore was "a little too co—incidental" before they fled the country. — CNA/ms
