Troops deployed in Bangladesh before polls
AP - Sunday, December 21
DHAKA, Bangladesh - Some 48,000 soldiers were deployed Saturday across Bangladesh to help maintain order ahead of national elections, which are to be held Dec. 29 after being stalled for nearly two years under emergency rule.
Lt. Cdr. S.M. Salauddin of the military's Inter-Service Public Relations Directorate said the troops would be stationed at makeshift camps nationwide in order to help ensure smooth balloting. The Election Commission said the soldiers will work outside the polling stations on election day.
In all elections since Bangladesh became a parliamentary democracy in 1991, troops have been deployed to maintain order.
Bangladesh's military-backed interim government came to power after President Iajuddin Ahmed declared a state of emergency to quell weeks of street violence over electoral reform that left more than 30 people dead.
The emergency rule was fully lifted Wednesday by the country's military-backed interim government to facilitate the polls and allow candidates to campaign. The government has pledged a free and fair election.
