Bangladesh's emergency leader prepares to step down
AFP - Thursday, December 18
DHAKA (AFP) - - The man who has run Bangladesh for almost two years under emergency rule said in comments published on Thursday that history would judge whether his tenure was a success.
Chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, who heads the army-backed government, told reporters that during a period of political instability he had acted in the best interests of the impoverished country's 144 million population.
"I've tried to work with all of my intelligence, consciousness and wisdom. The future will judge the success or failure of my works," he was quoted as saying by online newspaper bdnews24.com.
Ahmed, who has seldom spoken about his unusual period in power, said he had no career plans after the country returns to democracy in December 29 elections.
The 68-year-old former banker became chief adviser in January 2007 after months of political violence brought Bangladesh to a standstill, forcing the president to cancel elections and impose a state of emergency.
While in power, Ahmed has pushed through political reforms in an effort to clean up the notoriously graft-ridden country, including creating a photo-ID election register which eliminated 13 million fake names.
His interim authority imposed a crackdown on corruption, jailing former prime ministers Sheikh Hasina Wajed and Khaleda Zia for a year.
Political commentators hailed Ahmed as a neutral figure when he came to power but many have since suggested his regime bowed to pressure from politicians and failed to push through lasting changes to the political system.
The emergency was lifted on Wednesday, two weeks ahead of the elections, with Sheikh Hasina and Zia again fighting it out for control of the country.
