Knickers and kisses just a pizza the action on World Records Day
AFP - Friday, November 14
LONDON (AFP) - - Wannabe record breakers stripped off, puckered up or cooked up across the globe to celebrate a day of attempts to break curious world records Thursday.
Superheroes got their kit on while others were getting it off to stand around in their underwear as more than 50 different record attempts were made across 15 countries.
In London, the record for the largest gathering of people wearing only underpants or knickers was set at St. Pancras station Thursday with 116 people stripping off to give commuters a shock.
British topless model Ruth Reynolds set a new kissing record on Wednesday, but was topped by French student Valentin Pasquier who managed 94 kisses in a minute.
The English capital also claimed a record for continuous pizza line-up, stretching to a stomach-churning 285.5 metres (936 feet, seven inches).
The antics were all in the name of the fourth annual Guinness World Records Day, with hopefuls trying to secure a place in the next edition of their famous book of records.
"We are very happy to see that people are still passionate and eager to achieve their goals in the midst of the global market turmoil," said editor-in-chief Craig Glenday.
Bournemouth on England's south coast was hoping to set a record for the most people wearing superhero outfits.
Britain's love of tea helped inspire two new records set in Preston in northwest England, for the largest cup of tea at 400 litres and the largest tea bag, which weighed in at 60 kilogrammes.
In nearby Wigan, prisoners and staff at a young offenders' institute were trying to set the fastest time to run 100 miles (161 kilometres) on a treadmill.
Obscure record-breaking efforts took place elsewhere around the world.
A record attempt was planned in Serbia for the largest cabbage dish and Brazil was aiming to bake the world's largest loaf of bread.
In Tokyo, Kenichi Ito set the record for the fastest 100 metres on all fours at 18.58 seconds.
And a record of 3,032 was set in Dubai for the most children reading with an adult.
In New Zealand, multiple record-holder Alastair Galpin added to his collection with a new record for the fastest time to peel and eat one kiwi fruit (16.15 seconds).
He then broke the records for the loudest clap (113 decibels), most baseballs held in a baseball glove (14), furthest coin flicking (10.64 metres) and furthest golf ball blow (5.835 metres).
In the United States, an attempt at the largest dog wedding failed. However, American Asha Mandela did set the longest dreadlocks record at eight feet, six inches (2.59 metres) last week -- having been growing her hair for 20 years.
Her compatriot Joel Waul broke the record for the largest rubber-band ball with a one weighing 9,032 pounds (4,097 kilogrammes), measuring six feet, seven inches (two metres) tall with a diameter of 25 feet (7.62 metres).
Meanwhile, Canada was going for the world's largest leap-frog event.
In Germany, Martina Servaty broke the record for the most juice extracted from grapes in the allotted time (5.4 litres).
The largest image made of LED lights record was set at 26,981 outside Dublin, though in Belfast, attempts at the 21.95-second fastest 150 metres in high heels failed.
Brewers Guinness launched their famous records book in 1955 to settle disputes among drinkers.
The November date marks the point in 1974 when Guinness World Records made history in its own right by becoming the biggest-selling copyright book of all time.
All the record attempts are assessed by adjudicators from the organisation.
