Two British soldiers killed in Afghanistan: ministry
AFP - 2 hours 4 minutes ago
LONDON (AFP) - - Two British soldiers have been killed in an explosion in Afghanistan's restive southern Helmand province, the Ministry of Defence said Thursday.
The Royal Marines were taking part in a routine joint patrol Wednesday with Afghan security forces in the southern Garmsir district of Helmand when their vehicle was struck by an explosive device at 4:47pm (1247 GMT).
Ministry of Defence sources said they did not yet know what caused the explosion.
The troops were operating as part of the Information Exploitation Group, which is responsible for gathering information to improve awareness and gain an advantage over the Taliban insurgency.
The deaths brought to 124 the number of British soldiers who have died in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion in late 2001 that ousted the Taliban from power.
Britain has around 8,000 troops in Afghanistan, largely based in Helmand, where they are battling Taliban insurgents.
