India to push for more say at G20 summit
AFP - Friday, November 14
NEW DELHI (AFP) - - India's premier left for Washington on Thursday to attend the G20 summit, saying he would press for developing countries to have more say at the meeting with leading industrialised nations.
"I will put forward our views on the need for a greater inclusivity in the international financial system, the need to ensure that the growth prospects of the developing countries do not suffer, and the need to avoid protectionist tendencies," Manmohan Singh said in a statement.
"I am looking forward to the summit as an opportunity to exchange views with other leaders on the reasons behind the recent developments and to consider what steps should be taken by the international community" to tackle the global financial crisis, he added.
Leaders of the Group of 20 major rich and developing countries converge on Washington for discussions Friday and Saturday on ways to respond to the global economic meltdown and reforms to prevent another such crisis.
Created in 1999, the G20 accounts for 85 percent of the world economy and about two-thirds of its population.
