New website asks users to set tech priorities for Obama
AFP - Friday, November 14
WASHINGTON (AFP) - - US president-elect Barack Obama hasn't named his Chief Technology Officer yet but thousands of Internet users are chipping in with advice on what his or her priorities should be.
ObamaCTO.org, a website with no connection to the Obama transition team which launched this week, allows users to suggest and then vote on what the agenda should be for the nation's first Chief Technology Officer (CTO), a cabinet-level post Obama has promised to create.
"Ensure the Internet is widely accessible and network neutral," is the top votegetter at the moment with 6,380 votes followed by "Ensure our privacy and repeal the Patriot Act" with 4,736 votes.
"Repeal the Digital Millennium Copyright Act" comes in at number three with 4,002 votes followed by "Open Government Data" with 2,908 votes.
"Kick start research and innovation in energy" rounds out the top five with 2,768 votes.
The website was created by Front Seat, a Seattle-based software company, and is similar to others such as whitehouse2.org or BigDialog.org which allow users to suggest priorities for the president or submit questions.
Democratic candidate Obama was the overwhelming favorite of Silicon Valley during the presidential campaign against Republican John McCain and there has been widespread speculation the first CTO could be plucked from its ranks.
Obama relied heavily on the Internet for his successful presidential run and has indicated that he will preside over a much more interactive administration than his predecessors.
Change.gov, the official website for Obama's transition to the White House, invites users to offer their ideas for the future of the country by email.
