Australian navy intercepts suspected refugees
AP - 1 hour 47 minutes ago
SYDNEY, Australia - Australia's navy intercepted a boat carrying 20 suspected asylum seekers on a vessel in the Indian Ocean, officials said Sunday.
The boat was intercepted Saturday about 24 miles (39 kilometers) from Ashmore Island, off Australia's northwestern shore, Home Affairs Minister Bob Debus said in a statement.
The group was taken to Christmas Island, a remote Australian territory in the Indian Ocean where the government runs an immigration detention camp for health, security and identity checks, Debus said.
The nationalities of the people are not yet known, Debus' spokeswoman Samantha Wills said.
Most of the refugees who come to Australia travel on cramped, barely seaworthy boats from Indonesia. Many come from Iraq, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
On Friday, Australia granted asylum to a group of 28 people from Iran and Afghanistan, saying they faced persecution or death if they returned home. The decision marked the first time Australia has granted asylum since Prime Minister Kevin Rudd relaxed the country's formerly strict refugee policy in July.
Australia has long been a destination for people from poor, often war-ravaged countries hoping to start a new life.
