NATO: 1 soldier killed in southern Afghanistan
AP - 2 hours 47 minutes ago
KABUL, Afghanistan - A NATO soldier was killed in a clash with insurgents in southern Afghanistan, the military alliance said Sunday.
The soldier was on a patrol when he was killed Saturday, NATO said in a statement.
It did not release the soldier's nationality or the exact location of the clash.
Southern Afghanistan is the center of the Taliban-led insurgency, and the world's largest drug producing area.
The Taliban have made a comeback after their initial defeat during the U.S.-led invasion in 2001.
Violence in the war-torn country has reached a record level.
According to an Associated Press tally, 286 foreign military personnel died last year in Afghanistan, including 151 Americans and 51 Britons.
NATO has more than 52,000 soldiers in Afghanistan and there are an additional 13,000 American troops in the U.S.-led coalition.
The deteriorating situation in Afghanistan has forced the U.S. to deploy as many as 30,000 more soldiers to the central Asian country this year.
