Pakistanis rally against Israeli attacks in Gaza
By ASHRAF KHAN,Associated Press Writer AP - 1 hour 13 minutes ago
KARACHI, Pakistan - Thousands of Pakistanis rallied Sunday to condemn Israel over its assault on Gaza and the United States' support of the operation.
Supporters of the hard-line Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami gathered in the heart of the commercial hub of Karachi, waving Palestinian flags, banners and placards condemning the Israeli military action.
Police officer Sohrab Mayo estimated the size of the crowd at more than 10,000, including women and children. Police deployed to ensure security, but no violence was reported.
Smaller anti-Israel protests were also held in the cities of Lahore and Multan.
Pakistan, an overwhelmingly Muslim nation, has strongly sided with the Palestinian cause.
The Karachi demonstration began with party activists smacking portraits of President George W. Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert with their shoes in homage to the Iraqi journalist who flung his shoes at Bush in a now-iconic protest during the U.S. president's visit to Baghdad last month.
The two leaders were also burned in effigy along with flags of their countries.
Banners called for holy war against Israel and vengeance for the deaths of Palestinian children.
