Yaacob says Indian Muslim groups have role to play in tough economic times
Channel NewsAsia - 2 hours 14 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: Indian Muslim associations have played an active role in reaching out to the needy by working with other community groups.
That cooperation is even more crucial in these tough economic times, said Minister—in—charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim.
About 17 per cent of Muslims in Singapore are of Indian origin, and Dr Yaacob said there are niche areas where Indian Muslim groups can offer their services.
These include religious classes in the various Indian languages and providing social services to the community.
Dr Yaacob said that they can also leverage on the resources of existing national social service networks and community self—help groups such as SINDA, MENDAKI and MUIS.
He added that any new programmes initiated should provide value—add, rather than duplicate current efforts.
Dr Yaacob was speaking at the launch of the Community Education, Welfare and Development Lecture Series, a joint initiative by Muslim organisation Jamiyah Singapore and several Indian Muslim associations.
