Battle Creek, MI (AHN) - Kellogg Co. (NYSE: K) has announced a voluntary recall of 16 products that contain peanut butter, which could be connected to a recent salmonella outbreak leading to 453 illnesses and five deaths.
Salmonella infections is considered as life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.
Federal health officials from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control said Friday that they were investigating a Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) processing facility in Georgia Blakely, Georgia.
On Jan.14, Kellogg put a precautionary hold on the sandwich crackers while FDA investigated PCA's plant, which is one of Kellogg's peanut paste suppliers for these crackers.
"The actions we are taking today are in keeping with our more than 100- year commitment to providing consumers with safe, high-quality products," Kellogg's President and CEO David Mackay said in a statement. "We apologize for this unfortunate situation."
Lynchburg, Virginia-based Peanut Corporation of America recently announced an expanded recall of peanut paste and peanut butter produced on or after Aug. 8, 2008 and peanut paste produced on or after Sept. 26, 2008 at the Georgia facility.
"The FDA informed PCA that new product samples in unopened containers tested positive for Salmonella," President of Peanut Corporation of America Stewart Parnell said in a statement on Friday.
The health officials have not yet confirmed the DNA fingerprints of these positive samples to match the strains causing the outbreaks of food borne illness in several states, according to the statement.
The U.S. health officials have indicated that the salmonella outbreak spread to 43 states and Canada since mid-September.
The recall by Battle Creek, Michigan-based Kellogg includes Austin and Keebler branded Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers; snack-size packs of Famous Amos Peanut Butter Cookies; and Keebler Soft Batch Homestyle Peanut Butter Cookies.
With 2007 sales of nearly $12 billion, Kellogg is the world's leading producer of cereal and a leading producer of other convenience foods.
