French military helicopter crashes with 10 aboard
AFP - Sunday, January 18
LIBREVILLE, (AFP) - - Ten French soldiers were missing after a military helicopter crashed in the sea during a bilateral exercise off the west African nation of Gabon, a senior officer told AFP here.
The helicopter went down Saturday off Nyonie, a small town situated between the capital Libreville and the town of Port-Gentil further south, Lt.-Col. Pascal Carpentier said.
"We are continuing the search. We have no news for the moment, but conditions are not very favourable with a dark night," he said. The region was hit with storms at the time.
By 1:30 am Sunday (0030 GMT) there were no sightings of the aircraft or possible survivors.
In Paris the presidential palace said in a statement: "The President of the Republic (Nicolas Sarkozy) has just been informed about the crash of a French helicopter with 10 military personnel aboard in the sea off Gabon as it participated in a bilateral exercise.
"The head of state has asked that all available means in the area be immediately deployed to find the soldiers who were aboard."
Sarkozy ordered Defence Minister Herve Morin to immediately travel to the area. He was expected to leave early Sunday morning.
Carpentier said: "We have put all our available means into the operation. There are aircraft and the ship La Foudre", a landing-craft transporter. He added: "We have also appealed to (oil company) Total which has put three vessels at our disposal."
The helicopter, a Cougar, crashed at around 1900 GMT Saturday.
Six hundred soldiers backed by Cougar and Fennec helicopters were taking part in a joint exercise to coordinate maritime safety operations. During Operation N'Gari, men were to be parachuted onto predetermined targets including Nyonie.
