Chinese official under fire for lavish lifestyle
AP - Wednesday, December 24
BEIJING - A Nanjing government official caught in photos wearing a pricey wristwatch and smoking expensive cigarettes is now the target of a government investigation, local officials and state media said Tuesday.
Zhou Jiugeng, director of the real estate management bureau in Jiangning district of the city, came under fire from Internet users who saw online photos of him sporting a 100,000-yuan ($15,000) Swiss-made Vacheron Constantin watch and smoking Nanjing 95 Imperial cigarettes, which cost 150 yuan ($23) a pack, according to the official China Daily newspaper.
Several people filed complaints with the local government, wondering how a public servant could maintain a lavish lifestyle.
Local government officials confirmed that Zhou's financial assets are currently under investigation by the Commission for Inspecting Discipline.
"As to the online questions over his integrity, relevant departments are seriously concerned and started an investigation," said a statement on the local government Web site posted over the weekend. "Once any acts are found to be corrupt or against regulations, he will be seriously dealt with according to relevant regulations."
A staffer at the Jiangning government office who gave her surname as Zhou said that "officials of both Nanjing city government and Jiangning district government are seriously concerned about it."
Attorney Qiu Baocheng, the head of a Beijing law firm, was quoted in the newspaper saying, "In order to crack down on corruption, the government should encourage the public to keep an eye on its officials because the officials live among the common people."
