Nepal media protest attack by ex-rebels
By BINAJ GURUBACHARYA,Associated Press Writer AP - Tuesday, December 23
KATMANDU, Nepal - Nepal's newspapers ran blank editorials Tuesday to protest an attack on a newspaper office by activists linked to country's ruling party.
Reporters and staff members at Himal Media _ publishers of the Nepali Times newspaper and Himal magazine _ were beaten up Sunday by former communist rebels who accused the media group of publishing stories criticizing their Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). The office was also vandalized.
The Maoists, who gave up their armed revolt in 2006, lead the country's coalition government. Activists from the group have been involved in attacks on journalists and businesses and have been accused of extortion.
The Media Society and Editors' Alliance in Nepal said it strongly condemned the attack and would launch a series of protests, starting with blank editorials in all member newspapers.
"This is the first in a series of escalating protests that our media companies will launch if the current organized attacks on us by groups affiliated to the ruling party are not stopped immediately," the society said in a statement.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the leader of the Maoist party, said he has ordered an investigation into the attack.
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists called for an open, independent and nonpartisan investigation into the attack. It said the investigation should be followed by full prosecution of the perpetrators.
A group of journalists protesting the attack in Katmandu on Monday were blocked by riot policemen and beaten with bamboo batons. Six journalists were injured.
