Facebook users garner support for Chew Chor Meng
Channel NewsAsia - Tuesday, December 23
Netizens have set up groups and events on social networking website Facebook, to rally members in synchronized fasting and prayers for veteran MediaCorp actor Chew Chor Meng.
Chew has been diagnosed to have contracted Spinal Muscular Atrophy, otherwise known as Kennedy's disease.
On Facebook, more than 400 people have joined the group "Don't Worry Be Happy, Chew Chor Meng" to show support for Chew and hopes he will be able live life without worries like the classic sitcom character Lobang King, which he portrayed in the 90s. Another support group "Prayers for Veteran MediaCorp actor Chew Chor Meng" has attracted more than 900 people.
An event page "Synchronised Prayers for veteran Mediacorp actor Chew Chor Meng" has also been set up to rally for people to synchronise prayers between 10pm to 10.30pm daily from Dec 22 to Dec 31. Another event calls for members to fast for five days between 6am to 6.30am. The creator of these events hopes that miracle will happen through the power of the masses.
Actress Aileen Tan has been praying for Chew since she learned of his illness. "I am very upset when I first learn of it. It hurts me. Why is it so unfair? Such misfortune should not befall on him," she says.
Actress Celeste Chong is sorry to hear the news. "It's very sad. Chor Meng has been bringing much happiness, hope and entertainment to everyone all these years. It is really painful to see him suffering."
Chew is currently appearing on Channel 8 drama "Love Blossoms 2". Filming for the serial has ended and he is not working on any new assignments at present.
