Abadi, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Joint Forces, told his audience that it is not possible to stop suicide bombers and that American forces in Iraq will change their role from “operational,” to “training” after the targeted withdrawal date. Abadi, however, added that by “end of August, we should be able to free self-less (American) soldiers to return home.” Addressing a National Press Club Newsmakers press conference on Thursday, April 8 at the National Press Club, Washington, DC, Abadi said, “You cannot stop suicide bombers - these guys are fanatics - this is their way of saying, ‘we are alive and can carry out operations.” On a visit to the U.S. capital to participate in “Joint Observance in Remembrance of the Fallen, in advance of Reconciliation, Understanding and Peace among peoples and Nations,” the Iraqi general addressed “the transformation of yesterday’s enemy into today’s ally,” to mark Iraq Liberation Day.” Recalling the “sacrifices of the American soldiers in Iraq,” General Abadi in an emotional statement said, “Thanks all America! The sacrifices (of American soldiers) did not go in vain.” Calling the elections in Iraq, “transparent elections last month,” the general reiterated the need for “continuity to democracy and freedom.” “We are going through learning process in democratic principles and institutes,” he said. Referring to the American “Civil War,” the general said, “Americans did survive,” and the American values “defined this great nation,” of today. On the building of the Iraqi military forces, the general said the need of today is to build “Airforce” strength as till now most of the budget went to building army which has now “14 divisions.” From now on, “70% of the budget will go to Airforce,” he noted. Although the Iraqi government will need at least “three sources (quotations),” for Airforce procurements, the general explained that there is a “special deal with the U.S. over the supply of F-16 fighter jets,” with a plan to partner with F-16 squadrons based in Iraq to “train” Iraqi pilots. General Abadi was recalled to military service in September 2003 as a senior advisor providing assistance and leadership during the formation and development of the new Iraqi Joint Forces. General Abadi disclosed that there is a ring road being build around Iraq with “Saudi Arabia side is already done,” to strengthen the border areas. General provides advice to the civilian leadership of the government of Iraq in developing and implementing the national security and military strategies.
