The United Nations said the mass exodus began in November from the districts of Orakzai and Kurram, which have been hit by Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militancy as well as sectarian violence. Pakistan launched a punishing assault against Taliban militants in Orakzai last month and the operation entered its 17th day on Friday. "More than 35,000 families or approximately 210,000 individuals from Orakzai and Kurram have been registered as internally displaced persons (IDPs) since November last year," UN refugee agency spokeswoman Ariane Rummery told AFP. She said of the 35,000 families, 16,376 had been registered as IDPs since February, mostly in the northwestern towns of Hangu and Kohat. She said Pakistani authorities had also registered this week fresh IDPs fleeing to Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province, from Kurram and Orakzai. However, she gave no breakdown of the latest movement of people. Military officials said that Pakistani troops killed up to 24 militants in gunfights after insurgents attacked checkpoints in Orakzai and Kurram, part of Pakistan's wild and semi-autonomous tribal belt in the northwest. The military has announced a running death toll of more than 100 militants in the Orakzai operation since March 24, but the figures cannot be verified independently because access to the remote area is extremely limited. The deadliest clash took place in Bezot Khel village in Orakzai overnight. "Troops killed 15 militants in a gunfight which started after an attack on a checkpoint," local military spokesman Major Fazlur Rehman told AFP. Rehman said the troops captured four militants wounded during the fighting and that three soldiers were also injured. Local administration official Sajjad Ahmad confirmed the incident and casualties. Orakzai is a former bastion of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan leader Hakimullah Mehsud, whom US officials believe probably died in a US drone attack in January. The Pakistani military says it has no evidence he is in the area. Under US pressure, Pakistan has in the past year significantly increased operations against militants in its tribal belt, which Washington has described as the most dangerous region on Earth and a global headquarters of Al-Qaeda. The military said troops killed nine militants and wounded 10 others in Kurram, after the rebels stormed their checkpoint at Dogar village. Militants left behind a cache of arms, explosives and equipment while fleeing, it said. Close to the tribal belt, police said they killed two suspected would-be suicide bombers after a gunfight in northwestern Lakki Marwat district, where a massive bomb attack killed 101 people on New Year's Day. "Two suspected suicide bombers, when chased and confronted by police, hurled a hand grenade at them and then a gunfight lasting about 40 minutes started," district police chief Muhammad Ayub. "Both suicide bombers were killed by police," Ayub said. He described both as younger than 25 years old and as residents of Lakki Marwat. The rugged tribal terrain became a stronghold for hundreds of extremists who fled neighbouring Afghanistan after the US-led invasion in late 2001. Washington says the militants use Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal belt to plot and stage attacks against NATO troops stationed in Afghanistan.
