Seattle, WA, United States (AHN) - A lawsuit filed by family members of four murdered Washington state police officers claims the tragedy could have been prevented if the jail monitored phone calls of inmates more closely.
According to the suit filed in Pierce County Superior Court, the families are seeking damages in the amount of $182 million.
The families of officers Ronald Owens, Mark Renninger and Gregory Richards filed the lawsuit this week.
Family members for officer Tina Griswold filed a suit against Clemmons’ relatives and acquaintances last week.
The suspect, Maurice Clemmons, gunned down four Lakewood officers in a coffee shop last November as the officers prepared to start their shift.
A few months before the incident, Clemmons made numerous phone calls from jail detailing how he planned to kill members of the police force after his release, according to reports.
An attorney for three of the families said the jail should have been monitoring Clemmons’ phone calls.
Clemmons had threatened a booking officer and had been charged with assault on two officers, classifying him as high-risk. Clemmons was on parole from Arkansas, but faced life in prison if convicted of another prior felony.
According to his phone calls, Clemmons was irate over his treatment by the law.
In September, he made a phone call to his half-brother stating he would rather be carried to his grave than stand trial.
Clemmons had been released on bond five days before the shootings. He was charged with child rape and assaulting an officer earlier in 2009.
Clemmns, 37, was killed by Seattle, WA, police after a two-day manhunt.
