HELSINKI - The world's largest cellphone maker Nokia <NOK1V.HE> said on Friday it had bought U.S. geographic technology firm MetaCarta, as a part of its strategy to offer local navigation services to its customers. It did not disclose the deal price, but said the Massachusetts-based company employed more than 30 people.
Apple unveils iAd platform; iPad sales look strong
CUPERTINO, California - Apple CEO Steve Jobs showed off a new smartphone operating system on Thursday that features an advertising platform to compete with Google's, and revealed stronger-than-expected sales of 450,000 units for the iPad. The iPhone 4.0 software will be available on Apple's <AAPL.O> hugely popular smartphone this summer, complete with a number of upgrades, including a long-awaited multi-tasking capability that allows the use of several applications at once.
Facebook joins drive to get UK voters to polls
LONDON - British election officials will for the first time use Facebook to encourage more people to register to vote on May 6 after turnout fell to historic lows in the last two ballots, a watchdog said on Friday. The Electoral Commission said every visitor to the social networking site on Saturday will be asked if they have already signed up to vote. If not, they will be redirected to the commission's site where they can register.
Apple's iPad takes video gaming seriously
RALEIGH, North Carolina - Apple's iPad tablet computer hasn't been out a week yet but there are already over 830 video games that have been developed to suit the large format, high definition, multi-touch screen. That number doesn't even include the nearly 25,000 iPod Touch and iPhone games that will also play on Apple's <AAPL.O> latest gadget which is a mix between a smartphone and a laptop but also clearly aims to cater for the growing numbers of gamers.
Yahoo technology chief to step down
SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc's <YHOO.O> chief technology officer and head of products is stepping down, the company said on Thursday. Ari Balogh is leaving for personal reasons and will remain with the company until June 3, Yahoo said in an emailed statement. A replacement is expected to be named in the coming weeks, the company said.
Mexico may cut millions of cellphones to fight crime
MEXICO CITY - Tens of millions of Mexicans could find their cellphones disconnected this weekend if the government goes ahead with a new law meant to fight crime by forcing people to register their identities. Advertisements on government radio and television have been urging Mexicans for weeks to register their cellphones by sending their personal details as a text message, but on Thursday 30 million lines remained unregistered as the Saturday deadline neared.
3D TV to face global test in soccer World Cup
LONDON - Hundreds of thousands of soccer fans are likely to get their first taste of live 3D viewing during this year's World Cup, the vast majority of them in cinemas rather than at home, according to football body FIFA. Together with partner Sony <6758.T>, FIFA plans to supply 25 World Cup matches in the immersive 3D technology made popular in cinemas by blockbuster movie Avatar and expected to spread to living rooms around the world this year.
FCC issues broadband agenda despite court loss
WASHINGTON - The head of the Federal Communications Commission vowed to press ahead with a broadband expansion plan despite a court ruling this week that undermined the agency's authority to manage networks. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said on Thursday that the appeals court ruling was narrowly cast and he issued a timetable for public comment and rulemaking on broadband goals ranging from reallocating airwaves to expanding Internet access for rural and low-income households.
Wi-Lan sues Apple, HP, others on Bluetooth patent
NEW YORK - Wi-Lan Inc <WIN.TO>, the Canadian technology licensing company, has filed a lawsuit accusing 19 computer and phone companies of infringing a patent by selling laptops and cellular handsets enabled with Bluetooth technology. Among the defendants are some of the world's best-known technology providers, including Apple Inc <AAPL.O>, Dell Inc <DELL.O>, Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N> and Intel Corp <INTC.O>.
Nokia eyes China boost for struggling music service
BEIJING/HELSINKI - Nokia <NOK1V.HE> will offer free music with its mobile phones in China, as it looks to emerging markets to boost the download service that is struggling to compete with Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> popular iTunes. The world's top cellphone maker will offer free music downloads from major labels and a number of independents at the Chinese launch for its Comes with Music service, which is tailored for downloads to cellphones and PCs.
