Team International, Team Asia tied at 3—3 after Day 1 of Lexus Cup
Channel NewsAsia - Saturday, November 29
SINGAPORE : Day 1 of the Lexus Cup, which is being held at the Singapore Island Country Club, has ended with both teams tied 3—all.
Team International and Team Asia competed in the foursome format, where players from each team take alternate shots.
Twelve players from each team were divided into six pairs.
Team Asia — Park Inbee and Kim Song Hee — took the first match convincingly against Team International’s Christina Kim and Helen Alfredsson.
Team International’s Cristie Kerr and Karen Stupples won the next tie, but teenager Yani Tseng, ranked No 2, combined well with Lee Seon Hwa to take match 3.
The two captains were not in form. Team Asia’s Pak Se Ri, conceded her match, while Team International’s captain Annika Sorenstam and partner Angela Stanford were no match for their rivals.
But in the end, Team International had to finish 3—all against their less experienced opponents from Asia.
Pak Se Ri said: "We got half (a) team (of) rookies basically, I think they are handling their pressure very well, so compared to the International Team they are really strong. I think we did well, so I am really happy about that."
Sorenstam said: "We are very pleased with the performance. There were some tough matches, some great golf overall and we had some teams which clicked very well."
Sorenstam, playing in her last LPGA event, is hoping to end on a high with a win here.
It is still a good start for Team International as they lost all their six matches on the first day of competition last year.
But with two more days left, it is still anyone’s game. And there is more than just pride at stake, as the winning team walks home with US$625,000.
The pairings for Saturday’s fourball format were also announced, while the singles format will be used for the final round on Sunday. — CNA/ms
