Sri Lanka says 5 rebels killed in fighting
AP - 2 hours 28 minutes ago
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Sri Lankan troops killed five Tamil Tiger rebels Friday during a latest fighting in the island's civil war, the military said.
Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said the clash broke out Friday afternoon in the northern rebel stronghold of Mullaitivu district. He said there were no military casualties.
Rebel officials could not be contacted for comment because communication lines to the rebels territory have been severed. It is difficult to verify battlefield reports given by both sides because journalists are barred from the war zone.
Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry said in a statement that the soldiers trying to capture the rebels headquarters Kilinochchi are moving "cautiously" because of the heavy monsoon rains causing difficulties to detect minefields and booby traps.
The government announced Wednesday that the fall of the rebels' de facto capital was imminent, claiming that the guerrillas having begun to retreat.
Government forces have claimed rapid battle successes in the past months, capturing a number of rebel bases and vast swathes of land, forcing the guerrillas to retreat into a shrinking territory in the northeast.
However, the reclusive rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran in his annual 'Heroes Day' speech Thursday dismissed the government offensive as neither "novel nor huge" and vowed to continue his separatist campaign.
Tamil Tiger rebels have fought the government since 1983 to create an independent homeland for the country's ethnic minority Tamils who have suffered discrimination by successive governments controlled by majority ethnic Sinhalese.
At least 70,000 people have been killed in the violence.
