650 migrants in land on Italian island in matter of hours: coastguard
AFP - Saturday, November 29
ROME (AFP) - - More than 650 migrants were rescued off the Italian Mediterranean island of Lampedusa Friday in treacherous conditions at sea, the local coastguard said.
One boat with over 300 migrants, including women and children, was helped into port Friday morning, coastguard said, after the passengers sent out a mayday message through satellite telephone.
Tunisians, Moroccans, Egyptians and Nigerians on board said they left a Libyan port on Wednesday. Some rescued passengers saying four fellow travellers had fallen overboard in the storm and drowned during the crossing.
A second boat carrying more than 350 people was also spotted by an Italian reconnaissance aircraft during the afternoon.
Coastguard asked a nearby fishing vessel to come to the migrants' assistance early evening as the bad weather prevented them from reaching the boat themselves in numbers.
The coastguard said they were able to assist the fishermen in a mammoth transfer of the passengers from one boat to the other, adding that the large fishing vessel would wait near the coast for the weather to improve before coming in to port.
The Italian interior ministry says an additional 10,000 migrants have landed on its shores in the first nine months of 2008 compared to 2007, with 24,241 recorded entries through to mid-September.
Lampedusa, about 200 kilometres (120 miles) south of Sicily, is a prime transit point for migrants trying to reach Europe from Africa by boat.
