Two special commercial flights to bring stranded S’poreans home from Thailand
Channel NewsAsia - Saturday, November 29
SINGAPORE : There will be two special commercial flights from U—Tapao International Airport at Pattaya this weekend to bring Singaporeans stranded in Thailand back home.
The airport, located 200 kilometres from Bangkok, is a one—runway airfield built by US forces during the Vietnam War.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs worked with Singapore Airlines to arrange the flights, which are scheduled to depart U—Tapao at 2pm and 7pm.
Singapore Airlines is also considering mounting more flights next week if there is a demand.
SilkAir will be operating two additional flights on November 28 and November 29 from Phuket to assist those who have made their way there to return home.
Singaporeans who wish to travel via these special commercial flights should make their bookings with the Singapore Airlines Office in Bangkok at +66 2353 6000 or Singapore Airlines Reservations in Singapore at +65 6223 8888.
Meanwhile, Jetstar Asia’s first flight to U—Tapao International airport, which took off at 7pm on Friday, was more than 80 per cent filled. And the carrier said it will continue contacting passengers affected by the closure of the airport in Bangkok.
"Qantas also has passengers who need help... so we are helping them to bring passengers back and also to bring the passengers who are from Singapore to U—Tapao," said Raphael Saw, head of Commercial, Jetstar Asia.
Malaysian—based AirAsia flew a flight to U—Tapao out of Kualar Lumpur on Friday evening to help stranded passengers get out of the country.
Tiger Airways will also be mounting weekend flights from Phuket to Singapore. — CNA /ls
