Sri Lanka troops slowed by rain in battle for Tiger HQ: military
AFP - 2 hours 32 minutes ago
COLOMBO (AFP) - - Monsoon rains have slowed a military offensive to capture the Tamil Tiger political headquarters in northern Sri Lanka, the defence ministry said on Friday.
It said, however, that troops were still moving towards the town of Kilinochchi from its western and southern boundaries despite the weather.
Troops are "moving in with no hurry considering (the) weather and the terrain," the ministry said.
On Wednesday, the government had announced that the fall of Kilinochchi was "imminent."
The defence ministry said mine-fields had shifted following heavy rains and grounds troops had to move more cautiously.
"The floods have made it extremely difficult for the soldiers to detect anti-personnel mines and traps... so they have to be extra cautious," the ministry said.
However, fighting raged along several fronts in the north, with troops killing at least two members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on Thursday, the ministry said, adding that troops suffered "minor damage."
The LTTE did not comment on the military claims, but its chief Velupillai Prabhakaran vowed on Thursday to fight on and push back government forces closing in on his de facto political capital.
"Whatever challenges confront us, whatever contingencies we encounter, whatever forces stand in our path, we will still continue with our struggle for the freedom of the Tamil people," he said in his annual "Heroes' Week" speech.
"We will continue with our struggle until the alien Sinhala occupation of our land is evicted," he said, referring to the island's ethnic Sinhalese majority, which dominates the government and security forces.
