Strong earthquake rattles western Indonesia
AP - 2 hours 23 minutes ago
JAKARTA, Indonesia - Officials say a strong earthquake has struck in the waters off western Indonesia.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the temblor Friday had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 and struck 140 miles (85 kilometers) southwest of Bengkulu, a city on Sumarta island. It was centered 21 miles (35 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.
Ali Imran, a local geological official, says there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
A massive earthquake off Sumatra in December 2004 triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people along the Indian Ocean coastline.
