3 Afghan police killed in Kandahar bomb blast
AP - 1 hour 32 minutes ago
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A bomb hidden in a wooden cart exploded Sunday in Afghanistan's largest southern city, killing three police officers and wounding 11 people.
The attack targeted a police vehicle in the city of Kandahar, said Zalmai Ayubi, a spokesman for the governor. He said five police officers were among the 11 wounded.
The bomb was hidden in a wooden cart commonly used by street vendors, he said.
Insurgents frequently target Afghan police, who have less training and equipment than the country's army.
Violence has risen steadily in Afghanistan the last two years. In the last two days alone four British Marines and three Canadian troops have been killed in attacks in the south.
More than 6,000 people have died in insurgency-related violence this year, according to an Associated Press count of figures from Afghan and Western officials.
U.S. commanders have requested an additional 20,000 American troops to support the 32,000 U.S. forces that are already in the country. In total the 41-nation international mission has close to 70,000 troops in Afghanistan.
