Tampines flea market helps homemakers and the needy earn income
Channel NewsAsia - 2 hours 38 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: A weekend flea market may just become a new way for some of those feeling the pinch this festive season to make a few extra dollars.
Since its official launch some six years ago, a flea market in Tampines has become a weekly affair.
In fact, on a good day, residents selling goods here can make up to as much as S$200 from half a day’s work, said MP For Tampines GRC, Irene Ng.
Thus, she started a new scheme called Sunday Market Plus.
This involves collecting good quality, donated items from various groups and distributing them to housewives and the needy to sell.
The idea came about after some of the women told her they wanted to set up stalls but didn’t know what to sell.
The British High Commission kicked off donations on Sunday by contributing items like books and toys. — CNA/vm
