Security clampdown for Indian PM's Kashmir visit
AFP - 45 minutes ago
SRINAGAR, India (AFP) - - Indian authorities Sunday deployed thousands of troops in Kashmir to prevent demonstrations by Muslim separatists as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited to the region.
Singh was scheduled to campaign for Congress candidates across the insurgency-hit region, where staggered seven-stage state elections are due to end December 24.
"We are restricting civilian movement to maintain law and order," police officer Pervez Ahmed said.
Singh was due to address an election rally in the southern district of Anantnag.
Separatists have called for a total strike and protests against Singh's visit, which comes a day after police shot dead a 20-year-old student during an anti-election protest in Pulwama district.
Many separatist politicians and rebels have called for a boycott of the polls, arguing elections strengthen New Delhi's hold over the disputed region.
However, the first four rounds of voting saw a more than 60 percent turnout.
Indian authorities stagger the polls in order to move troops around to provide security. But for the first time in nearly 20 years, there has been little election-related violence after guerrillas vowed not to threaten voters.
The nearly 20-year-old Muslim insurgency in Kashmir has left nearly 50,000 people dead according to the official count, and thousands more according to separatists and human rights groups.
