Channel NewsAsia - 2 hours 8 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: Singapore and the Gulf Co—operation Council will sign a free trade agreement during Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s official visit to Qatar beginning on Sunday.
Qatar is currently the Chairman of the GCC.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said this will be the Gulf Cooperation Council’s first FTA.
In Doha, Prime Minister Lee will meet with the Amir Sheikh Hamad Khalifa Al—Thani, Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al—Thani, and the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al—Thani.
Mr Lee is visiting the state at Sheikh Hamad’s invitation and is accompanied by Mrs Lee and senior ministers of state and officials from the Foreign Affairs and Finance Ministries.
Observers said while Mr Lee’s primary visit to Qatar is to sign the FTA, it will also be an opportunity for him to renew the healthy bilateral ties that Singapore has with the Middle Eastern state.
Mr Lee last visited Doha in November 2006 during his first official visit to the Middle East.
Qatar is Singapore’s fourth largest trading partner in the Middle East with bilateral trade last year standing at S$6.7 billion.
While in Doha, Mr Lee will also visit the newly—opened Museum of Islamic Arts.
He returns to Singapore on Tuesday. — CNA/vm
