Daughter of Myanmar ex-dictator released
AP - Sunday, December 14
YANGON, Myanmar - Myanmar's military government has freed the daughter of the country's late dictator Ne Win from house arrest, friends and relatives said Saturday.
Sandar Win, who was detained for more than six years in connection with a plot to overthrow the government, was released Friday, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of annoying the authorities.
"She is healthy and looks very happy after she regained her freedom," said a close friend who visited her at her home in Yangon.
The military government did not release any statement on Sandar Win's status.
The authorities placed 56-year-old Sandar Win, who is a doctor, and her father under house arrest on March 7, 2002 and blocked access to their lakeside house with barbed wire barricades after the arrest of her husband and their three sons.
Her husband and their three grown sons were convicted of plotting to overthrow the military government and sentenced to death in September 2002. The penalty was not carried out, and they remain detained at Yangon's Insein Prison _ where Ne Win's political opponents were incarcerated when he was in power.
Ne Win ruled Burma _ as Myanmar was then known _ with an iron fist after taking over in a military coup from 1962 until 1988, when the stirrings of a pro-democracy uprising forced him to step aside and allow a new junta to take power.
Ne Win died in December 2002 at the age of 91 while under house arrest.
