European Parliament negotiators approve climate deal
AFP - Sunday, December 14
BRUSSELS (AFP) - - European Parliament negotiators approved a landmark climate change deal reached by European Union leaders, tweaking the text ahead of a vote by the full legislature next week.
"A full consent" was given to the plan, paving the way for approval in the parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, one of the negotiators told AFP.
The EU's "20-20-20" climate change deal would decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020, make 20 percent energy savings and bring renewable energy sources up to 20 percent of total energy use.
The European Parliament's socialist group said it would ask members to approve the deal on Wednesday.
"The agreements reached these last few days are historic," said Martin Schultz, head of the socialist group.
Schultz said the deal has "opened the way" for progress ahead of next year's international climate change talks on a new global warming pact in Copenhagen.
Another EU representative predicted a lively debate on Wednesday, saying "the Greens will be tough."
But Green MEP Satu Hassi, a former Finish environment minister, said Saturday that he backed the agreement.
One of the negotiators said small changes were made to the three bills making up the package but that they do not change the deal reached at the summit of EU leaders on Friday.
