Protester killed during Indian Kashmir voting
AP - Sunday, December 14
SRINAGAR, India - Police say a protester was shot and killed in clashes with government forces during voting in Indian Kashmir.
Kashmir's Police Chief B. Srinivas says a 20-year-old man died of his wounds after police opened fire Saturday to control a spiraling protest at Koil village, about 16 miles (25 kilometers) south of Srinagar.
Srinavas says two other protesters were wounded.
It was the first death in clashes between protesters and police since the staggered elections for Kashmir's state legislature began on Nov. 17.
Voters were casting their ballots in the election's fifth phase on Saturday.
