Chile opens museum of Pinochet memorabilia
AFP - Sunday, December 14
SANTIAGO (AFP) - - Medals, uniforms and even toy soldiers belonging to late dictator Augusto Pinochet went on permanent exhibition Friday at the Pinochet foundation in Santiago.
"There's a sample of every gift he received for the important things he did, and not just because they liked him," Pinochet's widow Lucia Hiriart told reporters at the opening.
"In our house they couldn't be shown to the whole world, so it's very nice for me to see them here," she added.
The memorabilia are on display in four rooms at the foundation, one of which was Pinochet's office kept exactly as he used it for the last time.
The exhibition was opened two days after the second anniversary of Pinochet's death.
Pinochet's military regime overthrew Socialist president Salvador Allende in 1973. It is blamed for human rights abuses including some 3,000 deaths and disappearances until Pinochet was elected out of office in 1990.
Pinochet died on December 10, 2006 at a military hospital in Santiago, at the age of 91, after evading repeated attempts to bring him to trial.
Two weeks before his death, Pinochet took responsibility for actions committed under his rule, but never apologized for the suffering he caused.
