Temasek Poly in training tie—up to start courses in specialised 3D content
Channel NewsAsia - 2 hours 30 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: The next generation of 3D screen technology will enable viewers to enjoy three—dimensional films without the need for special glasses. And to help bring more content to such screens, Temasek Polytechnic has teamed up with a local 3D software distributor.
With a 3D LCD screen, no special glasses are required and the images will pop right up.
The special screens by manufacturers like Philips and Samsung aren’t readily available in the market yet but a 42—inch one currently costs over US$13,000.
Industry experts said they’ll be more prevalent in a year or two, but for prices to come down, there must also be enough content and expertise in generating it.
Making standard 3D content "autostereoscopic" so that no glasses are needed is a niche area Temasek Polytechnic and IM Innovations are currently exploring.
Dr Tan Hock Soon, manager, Interactive Digital Centre ASIA, Temasek Polytechnic, said: "I think our role is to make sure that the public know, firstly, about the technology. Secondly, we would like to train our students and professionals in such a kind of technology so that they know that autostereo content can also be created at home."
The partners are sharing their expertise at Asia’s first ACM SIGGRAPH Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques which opened in Singapore on Wednesday.
Courses will be held at Temasek Polytechnic to teach students and the public alike how to create 3D content using software called Cinema 4D and how to make it autostereoscopic. — CNA/vm
