South Africa's Clark wins Australian Open golf tournament
AFP - 2 hours 14 minutes ago
SYDNEY (AFP) - - South Africa's Tim Clark has won the Australian Open on the first playoff hole at Royal Sydney.
Clark, ranked 42, beat Australian Mathew Goggin in the sudden-death playoff to become only the third South African to win the 93rd Australian Open's Stonehaven Cup.
Clark, on his first tournament visit to Australia, stormed into the playoff with nine birdies in a closing five-under 67 to finish the 72 holes at nine-under 279.
Goggin missed a two-metre putt for par to lose the playoff and carding a closing three-under 69.
South African great Gary Player was a seven-time winner of the Australian Open between 1958 to 1974 and compatriot Bobby Locke won the trophy in 1955.
New Zealander David Smail threw away his chance of winning the Open when he succumbed to back-to-back double-bogeys at the 15th and 16th holes to relinquish a two-shot lead with four holes to play.
Smail finished with a three-over 75 to be in a tie for third place with Australians Robert Allenby and Stephen Dartnall on eight-under 280.
